To reach goals planning and control are key concepts. Planning is setting goals and determining how to meet them. The managers of an organization do strategic planning. They consider long term goals of the company. For each divisions and departments their own plans set by middle managers or supervisors. Setting objective is the next step to achieve planed goals. Objectives can be accomplished as a whole or part of the organization. Objectives can be categorize in to various types. Strategic objectives, operational objectives and personal objectives. The effective objectives have following characters. 1. Written 2. Measurable or observable 3. Clear 4. Specific 5. Challenging but achievable. By reading this chapter I get clear vision what I should do and why I am doing it. This lesion helped to develop my supervisory role in the workplace. Controlling is another key concept discuss in that chapter. The supervisor has controlling roll, which directly apply to me at workplace. Controlling help to ensure high quality work and keep cost under control. Figure 6.7 of the text book give valuable diagram about the controlling process. Reinforce successes and fix the problems is essential supervisory function. Exceptional principle is new concept. I did apply that principle without knowing it. Tools for controls is required to the supervisors. Budget, performance reports, personal observation can be used as tools. The effective control time sensitive. Actions need â€Å"timely†. The control should be cost effective, acceptable and flexible. REVIEW AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS – CHAPTER 6 6. What are some advantages of involving employees in the process of developing objectives? How can supervisors do this? Advantages Employees’ commitment will increase. They like to work on improve what they are doing. Giving ownership to develop the process, they may come up with better ideas, that supervisor has not considered.
